Unfashioned Creatures
or, The Modern Galatea
Created by Rose Gonzales & Hunter Lustberg | Directed by Chris Godshall
Unfashioned Creatures is a theatrical reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that zeroes in on themes of women’s bodily autonomy, queer desire, and societal othering.
This play takes influence from Alasdair Gray’s Poor Things, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Akira Kurosawa’s Rashômon, and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Here, Victor Frankenstein raises his second creation as his own; his first attempt, meant to be a male companion to satiate his own burgeoning queerness, had backfired, and the would-be Eve to the Creature’s Adam has proven herself to be a “more perfect” attempt at creating life from scratch.
Told in a series of vignettes from different players, the Bride learns the tale leading up to her creation, and longs for freedom from her creator as she comes to understand her existence as both a living being and a woman.
